Rain Fails to Dampen Hot Beechey

07/03/2010

After threatening to rain during the first part of the day, the weather gods finally made up their mind in the early part of the afternoon. A few spits turned into moderate falls, making the track greasy and slowing lap times by around twenty seconds. Numbers were down slightly with a couple of entries choosing not to go back out with damage too severe.

Once again Garth Duffy had a problem on track, with a momentary stop at turn 6 before refiring the car. Tony Bates went off at turn five and managed to keep the car off the grass while Adam Lloyd, pole sitter for race three, had an off at the final turn on lap five. Bates also went off at turn two while behind him a sensational brawl was under way between Josh Hughes and Adam Beechey. The rain eased enough for lap times to reach 1.23s with Beechey eventually reeled in by Hughes with one of the quicker cars on track. Under the circumstances, any drive was remarkable however it was Matt Chick that powered through to take the win. Bates did all he could to claw him back but settled for second in the race and third overall for the round. Second place getter in races one and two, Scott Andrews, found the slippery track a little hard to deal with and came home in seventh, to claim second overall for the round.

Winning race two and claiming the round showed Adam Beechey could be a force to reckon with, as he also banked the Hard Charger Award, for running up good placings from qualifying.

Chris Stevenson put his rallying experience to good use and finally had a car that stayed sane, finishing sixth in the race.

A big thanks to the competitors for showing the comraderie that people don’t get to see close up in motorsport, with some cars effectively running a mixed bag of parts from other teams. A big thanks to Glen Holdsworth for helping out in commentary and thanks to the teams for welcoming me as the new series commentator.

We’ll see you at Phillip Island.
