ALL TIED UP AT THE TOP AS HAYES GETS POLE
05/11/2011
ADAM BEECHEY and Matt Hayes will start from scratch in their battle for the 2011 V8 Commodore Cup series presented by Western General Bodyworks after Hayes evened the ledger by taking pole position at Phillip Island today.
The one bonus point Hayes scored for scoring the top spot drew him level with former series leader Adam Beechey ahead of tomorrows’ three races, making it a winner-take-all finale with the pair locked together on 629 points.
In the hottest conditions of the season, Hayes logged his quickest lap on just his second flyer when his tyres were at their best, and was unchallenged from there – taking pole by four-tenths of a second over his championship rival.
“I’m really pleased. The car feels good and we’ve found more speed as the weekend has gone on,” Hayes said.
“It’s completely level with Adam for the championship so all we have to do is finish in front of him in every race, though it won’t be easy. It’s going to be really competitive but we’re in a good position.”
Donut King racer Adam Beechey will start race one second with Matt Chick third and former champion Michael Tancredi fourth.
Another former series winner, 2006-champ Marcus Zukanovic, will start fifth but had a difficult day after an oil leak in practice forced him out of the session and cost him valuable track time.
Jordan Symes, Danny Buzadzic, Chris Stevenson, Ross McGregor and Jeff Watters completed the top ten.
The first of three eight-lap races will be contested at 9:10am tomorrow morning and will be live on www.itvlive.com.au
